Patients in Peril: Urgent Action Needed for Hospital Pharmacy Crisis in the NT 

Northern Territory public hospital pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have reached a crisis point—and it’s putting our health system and patients at serious risk. 

The Challenge: 

PPA members working in NT public hospitals are facing dangerously high vacancy rates and workloads that threaten the safety and quality of patient care. Despite almost a year of negotiations, the NT Government hasn’t yet put a fair offer on the table to help recruit and retain enough pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. We’ve repeatedly called for a meeting with NT Health Minister Steve Edington, seeking real solutions—only to be turned away. 

“Our members are exhausted,” says PPA Lead Organiser Jessica Hensman. “They’re working long hours, holding the system together, and caring for patients—while knowing the government’s offer leaves them unable to compete with other states to staff their teams.” 

Why It Matters? 

Every day these pharmacists and technicians go above and beyond, but as more posts remain vacant and burnout rises, critical services are under threat. If things don’t improve, Territorians in remote and regional areas—especially those battling cancer and other serious illnesses—may be forced to travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres to access treatment. 

This isn’t just about fair pay. It’s about keeping vital health care accessible for every Territorian.

Industrial action is a last resort, but our members feel they have no other choice left to make their voices—and patients’ needs—heard. The future of NT hospital pharmacy services is at stake.
